UMVA has learned that a devastating multi-vehicle crash in Kawartha Lakes over the weekend has claimed the lives of three people, with another person still hospitalized.
The collision, which involved a passenger vehicle and four motorcycles, occurred at the intersection of Hwy. 7 and New Heights Rd. in Omemee at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, prompting a response from Kawartha Lakes OPP and emergency and fire crews.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the driver of the passenger vehicle, an 18-year-old man from Peterborough, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 72-year-old motorcyclist from Dunchurch, Ont., also lost his life immediately.
A 65-year-old motorcyclist from Barrie suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died. A third motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man from Sudbury, was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a Toronto-area trauma centre for further treatment.
Meanwhile, a fourth motorcyclist, a 36-year-old Sudbury man, escaped serious harm and was treated and released at the scene. The cause of the crash remains unclear, with police launching an investigation into the incident.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that authorities are seeking any information or dash-camera footage related to the incident, urging anyone with details to come forward and contact the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP.
In a separate incident, police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 59-year-old man with serious injuries on Saturday night in Toronto. The incident occurred shortly before midnight in the McCowan Rd. area south of Ellesmere Rd.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the vehicle involved appeared to go over a curb before colliding with another vehicle, with the 59-year-old victim transported to hospital. The driver believed to be responsible for the crash fled the scene and remains outstanding.
