The artwork, meant as a memorial, became the target of relentless pressure from far-left activists who falsely labeled it a symbol of the far-right.
The mural was initially welcomed by the owners of The Dark Lady, a popular LGBTQ+ club where the artwork was being painted. Their acceptance quickly dissolved as a vocal minority manufactured controversy, twisting the tribute into something it was never intended to be.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, a Democrat, swiftly succumbed to the activists’ demands, ordering the mural’s removal. This decision has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many questioning the mayor’s willingness to appease a radical faction.
