LOGAN'S LAW: SC Demands Justice NOW!

LOGAN'S LAW: SC Demands Justice NOW!

This Sunday marks a year since Logan Federico was stolen from her family, a wound that time refuses to heal. For her father, Stephen, and her mother and brother, Melissa and Jacob, it’s a grief they navigate together, a constant ache in the fabric of their lives.

Logan wasn’t just a name in the news; she was a vibrant young woman, a beloved daughter and friend with a future brimming with possibility. That future was extinguished, brutally and without reason, leaving a void that can never be filled.

She came to South Carolina seeking connection with those she cherished, only to become a victim of senseless violence. A man with a history of criminal behavior, a man the system had repeatedly failed to contain, invaded her life and stole everything from her and her family.

Let us not shy away from the horror of what happened. He broke into a home and extinguished a life, and he alone bears the responsibility for his actions. But responsibility extends beyond the perpetrator; the system that allowed him to remain a threat also failed.

A year has passed, and the pain hasn’t lessened. It hasn’t become easier to bear. Instead, it fuels a demand for change, a call to action that echoes through the halls of justice.

The fight now is to dismantle the flaws within the system, to close the loopholes that allow dangerous individuals to slip through the cracks. It’s about reforming the judicial process and ending the cycle of release and re-offense that puts communities at risk.

Outdated methods of record-keeping and critical failures in information sharing created a blind spot, preventing decision-makers from having a complete understanding of the threat this individual posed. This cannot, and must not, ever happen again.

Complete and accurate criminal histories must be readily available to law enforcement, judges, and prosecutors before any decisions are made regarding an individual’s freedom. It’s a matter of common sense, a fundamental requirement for public safety, and a change that is desperately overdue.

A serious reevaluation of sentencing and rehabilitation is also crucial. Too often, repeat offenders are afforded the same leniency as first-time offenders, with charges reduced and sentences minimized. This isn’t compassion; it’s a dangerous gamble with innocent lives.

The system must recognize and respond to patterns of violent behavior with consequences that prioritize the safety of the community. Ignoring these patterns is not only irresponsible, it’s a betrayal of the public trust.

Real judicial reform is paramount. Judges wield immense power, and their decisions must be guided by transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Every ruling must be made with the potential consequences for the community at the forefront.

The growing movement to eliminate cash bail is particularly concerning. Bail isn’t about punishing someone before they’re convicted; it’s about ensuring that individuals who pose a danger to others are not released back into society before their trial. Those who represent a threat should remain in custody, period.

This weekend should not be an anniversary of loss, but a celebration of life. Logan should still be with us, her family should still be enjoying her presence, and no other family should ever endure the agonizing pain of losing a loved one to preventable violence.

This Sunday, we remember Logan Federico, honoring her life and the love she shared. But remembrance alone is insufficient. To truly honor her memory, we must act, we must demand change, and we must build a system that protects all our communities.
