Texas Senate hopeful Talarico in hot seat for calling men in women’s sports a ‘far-right conspiracy’

Texas Senate hopeful Talarico in hot seat for calling men in women’s sports a ‘far-right conspiracy’

A U.S. Senate candidate in Texas is facing mounting scrutiny for dismissing concerns about fairness in women’s sports as a manufactured political attack. James Talarico, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, labeled anxieties surrounding biological males competing in girls’ and women’s athletics a “far-right conspiracy.”

The controversy stems from a 2021 interview where Talarico accused the state’s governor of prioritizing baseless fears about transgender athletes. He specifically claimed that concerns about competitive imbalances were unfounded within Texas, dismissing them alongside objections to critical race theory in schools.

Talarico’s record reveals consistent opposition to legislation aimed at protecting competitive equity in sports. He voted against bills prohibiting biological males from participating in both K-12 and collegiate women’s sports, measures that ultimately became law in Texas.

His stance extends to broader issues of gender-affirming care, where he has actively opposed restrictions. Talarico argued against a bill seeking to ban sex change surgeries for children, asserting that such care does not constitute abuse.

During a debate, Talarico offered a particularly striking statement regarding the nature of divinity, declaring, “God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is non-binary.” This comment, along with others, has fueled criticism regarding his views.

Recent remarks on a podcast have also drawn fire. When asked about something he loved, Talarico expressed admiration for transgender children advocating for their rights at the state Capitol, stating they “shouldn’t have to,” but found their presence inspiring.

Critics have characterized these statements as deeply concerning. One activist noted the apparent contradiction of expressing love for transgender children while simultaneously advocating for procedures with potentially irreversible consequences.

Talarico’s advocacy extends to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. He co-authored legislation aimed at incorporating DEI principles into Texas schools, arguing that “radicalized White men” pose the greatest domestic terror threat.

He further elaborated on this belief, stating his own susceptibility to radicalization as a white man and emphasizing the importance of early exposure to diversity and inclusive values. He lamented the passage of a bill restricting discussions about race in schools, calling it a “dark day” for the state.

These positions, taken together, paint a picture of a candidate with deeply held and often controversial beliefs, sparking debate about his suitability to represent the state of Texas in the U.S. Senate.
