Man Killed by Crocodile at Popular Puerto Vallarta Resort

A California couple vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, witnessed a fatal crocodile attack on Friday. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time at Marina Vallarta Beach, according to local authorities. The 28-year-old victim, a Mexican man who had traveled to the area for work, was discovered the following morning in the water with no further details disclosed by law enforcement.

Jamie Yetter and Chris Bury of San Clemente, California, were staying at the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa to celebrate their daughter’s high school graduation when they heard screams from the ocean. Bury, who stepped into the water to assist, recounted hearing a warning: “It’s a crocodile!” He described attempting to throw a life preserver to the victim but arriving too late as the reptile dragged the man underwater.

Yetter described the crocodile’s size, noting its head was as long as her torso and its tail thicker than her legs. “He was just turning him, taking him under,” she said. American crocodiles in the region can grow up to 16 to 19 feet long, making the attack an alarming reminder of the risks associated with coastal waters.

The couple expressed concerns about insufficient warnings at the beach. “They didn’t tell anyone it was dangerous,” Yetter said. The area remained open the following day with no additional signage or restrictions, despite the incident. Authorities confirmed the beach reopened the morning after the attack with no public advisories in place.

A statement from the resort emphasized its commitment to safety, citing existing precautions such as caution signs, night patrolling, and red flags. It also pledged support for the victim’s family. The facility stated it regularly collaborates with local authorities to review safety protocols.
