Jose Mourinho has returned to the Real Madrid dugout, and the Spanish giants are reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.
McTominay's potential transfer to Real Madrid has gained momentum, with claims from Italy suggesting that the Spanish club are interested in the player. A deal worth up to £30m was agreed upon when McTominay left Manchester United two years ago, and Real Madrid would still need to negotiate with Napoli, who own the player's contract.
Napoli have reportedly placed an €80million (£69m) price tag on McTominay, which could be a significant hurdle for Real Madrid to overcome. However, the Spanish club could potentially benefit from a 10 per cent sell-on clause in McTominay's contract, which was agreed upon when Manchester United sold him.
The midfielder's contract situation is unclear, with negotiations to extend his deal beyond 2028 having stalled. McTominay's priorities may lie elsewhere, as he prepares to return to Napoli after the World Cup.
McTominay's World Cup journey with Scotland has been marred by criticism, with the midfielder accused of going missing on the pitch. Despite a dismal 3-0 defeat to Brazil, Scotland still have a glimmer of hope in qualifying for the knockout stage.
For Scotland to stay in the competition, four other third-placed teams must finish with a worse record than them. Currently, Scotland's chances of reaching the knockouts are slim, with odds of 0.07 per cent.
However, there are still scenarios that could see Scotland qualify for the knockout stage. These include Ghana beating Croatia by at least three goals, DR Congo drawing with Uzbekistan or Uzbekistan winning by no more than three goals, and Austria beating Algeria by two or more goals or Algeria winning by at least four goals.
