UMVA has learned that Chelsea are already scrambling to find a replacement for Marc Cucurella, who has made a stunning move to Real Madrid, and Sporting CP’s Maxi Araújo has emerged as a top contender on their wishlist.
The Blues have reportedly scouted the Uruguay international and have made discreet enquiries with his representatives, indicating that they are doing their due diligence in case they decide to make a formal move. Cucurella’s exit has left Chelsea with a glaring gap on the left side of defense.
Real Madrid secured Cucurella’s services on a lucrative six-year deal, valued at a whopping £51.8m by British media. While that represents a handsome sale for Chelsea, it also creates an immediate squad problem that needs to be addressed.
Araújo is an intriguing option for Chelsea due to his versatility - he can play as a left-back, wing-back, or even further forward on the left, offering tactical flexibility. Several European clubs, including Tottenham, have expressed interest in Araújo, which could spark a bidding war.
Since joining Sporting in 2024, Araújo has developed into a key player, delivering impressive performances that have increased his value. Chelsea may need to part with around £35m to secure his services, although his release clause is reportedly much higher.
Securing Araújo’s signature won’t be a straightforward deal for Chelsea. While he is experienced, athletic, and attack-minded, the Blues need to be convinced that he can handle the intensity of the Premier League, defend one-on-one, and contribute meaningfully in possession.
Chelsea’s interest in Araújo appears genuine, but it’s still at the enquiry stage. The next step is for the Blues to decide whether Araújo is the player they want to seriously pursue.
