TOURISM REVOLUTION: New Boss Just DROPPED!

TOURISM REVOLUTION: New Boss Just DROPPED!

A new vision for Philippine tourism has arrived with the appointment of Dita Angara-Mathay as the Department of Tourism’s Secretary. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. selected the experienced public servant to lead the nation’s efforts in attracting visitors and bolstering the economy.

The administration views this appointment as a pivotal step in transforming tourism beyond a simple cultural display. The goal is to harness its power as a significant engine for job creation, business expansion, and balanced regional growth throughout the islands.

Angara-Mathay brings a wealth of international experience to the role, honed during her time as a Commercial Counselor at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Tokyo. There, she skillfully forged crucial partnerships with key Japanese industries, laying the groundwork for increased investment and collaboration.

Her previous work extended beyond securing partnerships; she spearheaded initiatives designed to connect Filipino businesses – particularly the vital micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises – with opportunities on the global stage. This focus on empowering local entrepreneurs is expected to be a cornerstone of her leadership.

The intention is clear: to integrate tourism more seamlessly with the nation’s overall economic strategy. This includes attracting foreign investment, providing robust support for local businesses, and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are widely distributed across all regions of the Philippines.

Verna Buensuceso served as officer-in-charge since March, stepping in after Ma. Christina G. Frasco transitioned to the role of Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities. Frasco’s tenure wasn’t without its challenges, facing public discussion regarding promotional campaigns that emphasized her image over the beauty of the Philippines itself.

Angara-Mathay now inherits a department poised for change, with expectations high for a renewed focus on showcasing the Philippines’ diverse attractions and fostering sustainable, inclusive growth within the tourism sector.
