UMVA Exclusive: Former NFL Linebacker’s Shock Return to Congress Secured by Texas Runoff Victory and Jasmine Crockett’s Endorsement!

UMVA has learned that former Rep. Colin Allred is on the brink of a dramatic return to Congress after clinching a fierce Democratic runoff Tuesday.

Allred edged out Rep. Julie Johnson in the decisive contest for a freshly redrawn Dallas‑area seat, positioning him as the overwhelming favorite to capture the deep‑blue district in November.

The district’s lines were reshaped last year by Republicans to boost Democratic strength, even as the party crafted a new map aimed at flipping several GOP‑held seats.

The primary turned razor‑sharp as both candidates fought to preserve their political futures in one of the few Texas districts still leaning Democratic.

Incumbent Democrat Marc Veasey stepped aside, prompting Johnson—who had been pushed out of her own district by the new map—to jump into the race.

Johnson, a freshman lawmaker, had succeeded Allred after he abandoned the seat for an ill‑fated Senate bid against Sen. Ted Cruz.

Allred reentered the fray late last year, shelving his 2026 Senate ambitions after they stalled, and immediately set his sights on reclaiming the House seat.

His campaign gained momentum when he threw his support behind Rep. Jasmine Crockett, sparking a heated exchange with state Rep. James Talarico, who was accused of making a racially charged remark about Allred.

Talaric denied the allegation, insisting his comments targeted Allred’s campaign tactics rather than his character.

Backed by Crockett’s endorsement and a vigorous ground game, Allred faced a well‑funded Johnson, who counted the support of House Democratic leaders, major reproductive‑rights groups, and business interests.

Allred’s statewide name recognition and a sizable fundraising edge helped him lead the March primary by 11 points, though he fell just short of an outright majority, triggering the runoff.

The runoff victory cements Allred’s path back to Capitol Hill, setting the stage for a likely landslide in the November general election.
