A bold move by a lone Republican Congressman has led to a new resolution aiming to sue President Trump over the ongoing war in Iran.
House Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky has joined forces with Democrats to introduce a resolution challenging Trump's authority over the military operations in Iran. The resolution, though lacking practical effect, criticizes the Trump administration for ignoring Congressional authorization.
Despite previous wars being authorized by Congressional AUMFs (Authorization for Use of Military Force), the administration has not sought any such authorization for the Iran war. Consequently, there is an argument that their actions are unconstitutional.
House Speaker Paul Johnson has stated that an AUMF may not be necessary at present, but acknowledges that a resolution needs to be resolved. He emphasized that discussions regarding the resolution are ongoing and the administration is actively working on ending the conflict. However, Johnson believes that the president should consult with Congress before taking further action.
