UMVA has learned that Jamie Varley, a former teacher, broke down in emotion while giving evidence in court about the tragic death of 13-month-old Preston Davey, a baby he had adopted with his partner.
Varley's voice cracked as he denied allegations of killing Preston, sexually assaulting the child, or wilfully causing harm. When asked if he had deliberately blocked Preston's airway, Varley replied firmly, "No, I did not."
The court heard that Preston suffered 40 traumatic injuries, including bruises and internal harm, before his death in July 2023. Varley denied taking indecent photos of the baby as 'trophies' or 'mementos' of sexual assaults, and claimed he had bonded with Preston and loved him deeply.
Varley explained a text message he sent to his sister, saying "He's dead meat" after a sleepless night with Preston, describing it as a casual expression. He also addressed concerns about photos of bruises on Preston, attributing them to accidental injuries from the baby's daily mishaps.
The court viewed disturbing images of Preston in his cot, apparently partially suspended and seemingly asleep or unconscious, which Varley took four days before the baby's death. Varley expressed shame and disappointment, stating he had not meant to cause distress or harm.
Preston's cause of death was determined to be acute upper airways obstruction, likely caused by smothering or objects inserted into his mouth. The jury heard that some injuries suggested possible "forcible penetration" and clinical signs of sexual abuse.
Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, are accused of heinous crimes related to Preston's abuse and death. The trial continues, with Varley denying multiple charges, including murder, manslaughter, and sexual assault.
