The heat wave that has been slowly building in Toronto has finally arrived, with temperatures expected to soar throughout the week, including Canada Day.
Environment Canada predicts high temperatures ranging from 29ºC to 35ºC, with the humidex making it feel even hotter. On Monday, the high was expected to reach 29ºC but will feel like 32ºC, with a 40% chance of showers overnight and a risk of thunderstorms. The heat and humidity are expected to continue throughout the week, with Tuesday's high feeling like 41ºC.
As the city prepares for the holiday, officials are warning of large crowds and potential safety issues. Toronto Police Supt. Dave Correa has stated that there will be a significant police presence in the area, including officers on foot, bicycles, ATVs, and horseback. Bylaw officers will also be on site to monitor crowd dynamics and respond to any issues that may arise.
The heat wave is expected to last until Sunday, with highs in the low to mid-30s continuing through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It's not until Sunday that the heat relief will finally arrive, with a high of 28ºC expected.
Toronto residents and visitors are advised to take necessary precautions to stay cool and safe during the heat wave. This includes staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
