SOLAR EXPLOSION: TotalEnergies & Nextnorth Ignite Isabela!

SOLAR EXPLOSION: TotalEnergies & Nextnorth Ignite Isabela!

A colossal wave of solar energy is about to crash onto the Philippines, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between TotalEnergies and Nextnorth. A staggering $300 million – equivalent to nearly P18.44 billion – has been secured to fuel this ambitious project.

The heart of this venture is a 440-megawatt-peak solar power plant, poised to dramatically reshape the energy landscape of Isabela. This isn’t just a collection of panels; it’s a commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the region.

More than half of the plant’s immense power will flow directly to businesses and industries through long-term contracts with leading electricity suppliers, AdventEnergy and PrimeRES. These agreements ensure a stable supply and a vital boost to commercial and industrial growth.

The remaining energy will surge into the national grid, bolstering the country’s overall power capacity and contributing to a more resilient energy system. This project’s success in the government’s green energy auction program marks a significant step forward for renewable energy adoption.

The financial backbone of this monumental undertaking rests firmly on the shoulders of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., ING Bank NV, and Standard Chartered. Their investment underscores the project’s viability and the growing confidence in the Philippines’ renewable energy sector.

What’s truly remarkable is that this solar project represents the largest international financing ever directed towards a solar development in the Philippines. It’s a testament to TotalEnergies’ unwavering dedication to expanding renewable energy opportunities globally.

“This project will be a cornerstone in our journey to deliver clean energy,” stated Olivier Jouny, a senior vice-president at TotalEnergies. He highlighted the project’s crucial role in bolstering the company’s expansive 9-gigawatt renewable energy portfolio, a collaborative effort with Masdar across nine Asian nations.

“The Philippines faces a critical need for domestic, scalable, and undeniably bankable renewable capacity,” explained Miguel Mapa, President and CEO of Nextnorth. “Rising energy demands and a reliance on imported fuels demand a bold, proactive response.”

TotalEnergies, a global energy giant, is a powerhouse producing oil, biofuels, natural gas, biogas, low-carbon hydrogen, and electricity – all sourced from renewable sources. Nextnorth, deeply rooted in the Philippines, is a developer with a vast pipeline of over 800 megawatts of projects already in the works.

This collaboration isn’t just about building a solar plant; it’s about forging a path toward energy independence and a brighter, more sustainable future for the Philippines. It’s a powerful demonstration of what’s possible when ambition meets innovation.
