A stunning escalation unfolded in Washington as Democratic lawmakers formally made a criminal referral of former Department of Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem to the Justice Department. The accusation centers on what they allege were repeated false statements made under oath during recent Congressional oversight hearings.
The referral, issued by leaders of both the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, alleges Noem deliberately misled Congress regarding a significant departmental expenditure. This action signals a potent warning from Democrats, hinting at potential future investigations should they regain control of the White House in 2029.
The controversy stems from a $200 million advertising campaign spearheaded by Noem, which she claimed had received full presidential approval. However, accounts from within the Trump administration paint a drastically different picture, suggesting the former President was deeply unhappy with both the campaign itself and Noem’s portrayal of events.
Senator John Kennedy reportedly described himself as “mad as a murder hornet” after hearing Noem’s testimony, stating her version of events sharply contrasted with President Trump’s recollection. Specifically, Noem testified she proposed a quarter-billion-dollar ad campaign starring herself, and that the President found the idea “swell.”
Further scrutiny revealed the bidding process for the ad campaign was far from competitive. Only three companies were invited to bid, and these selections raised immediate red flags. One firm subcontracted work to the spouse of a Noem aide, while another had ties to Corey Lewandowski, a close advisor to Noem and former Trump campaign manager.
The third company selected was linked to Erica Knight, a prominent Trump influencer, deepening concerns about potential conflicts of interest and improper influence. Noem initially told Congress the contract was awarded through a standard, competitive bid process, a claim now directly challenged by evidence.
The timing of these revelations coincided with Noem’s abrupt reassignment by President Trump to the role of Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas. Simultaneously, Lewandowski also departed his position within the Department of Homeland Security, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding situation.
While the current Justice Department, under President Trump, is widely expected to take no action on the referral, the Democrats’ move serves as a clear declaration of intent. It establishes a detailed record of alleged wrongdoing, poised for potential prosecution under a future administration.
