UMVA has learned that a Virginia Democrat has blasted the Department of Justice’s civil rights probe into Fairfax Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano as a “hit job,” igniting a firestorm of controversy.
The DOJ opened an investigation after allegations surfaced that Descano’s office granted preferential treatment to criminal illegal immigrants in charging and plea‑deal decisions, potentially violating federal anti‑discrimination statutes tied to federal funding.
Fairfax County Supervisor Dan Storck, who represents the Mount Vernon District, erupted, labeling the inquiry a politically‑motivated “hit job” and accusing the current administration of weaponizing the Justice Department against officials they dislike.
Storck voiced deep frustration, admitting he cannot place confidence in the Justice Department at this moment and urging a shift in focus toward “significant and serious” crimes rather than partisan attacks.
Critics point to a troubling pattern where Descano’s office allegedly dropped violent charges and ignored warnings about a suspect later linked to the murder of Stephanie Minter, a 41‑year‑old mother, at a Fairfax bus stop. The suspect, a Sierra Leone national with more than two dozen prior arrests, was eventually identified.
In response, Descano asserted that his policies are fair, legal, and reflect the values of his community, insisting his office operates within the bounds of the law.
Storck emphasized that repeat offenders must be held accountable, stressing that the courts should deliver consequences for those who repeatedly flout the law. He noted his conversations with Descano, confirming a shared commitment to community safety.
The supervisor called for law enforcement to concentrate resources on individuals with serious criminal histories, arguing that protecting neighborhoods requires seamless cooperation among judges, prosecutors, and police.
He pledged to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, vowing to fight relentlessly for the safety and security of Mount Vernon residents.
Financial disclosures reveal that Descano’s campaign has received substantial contributions from a political action committee heavily funded by a prominent Democratic donor.
Both Descano and Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid recently testified before a congressional subcommittee on immigration integrity, security, and enforcement, underscoring the contentious nature of the investigation.
