PRITZKER'S POWER PLAY: 2028 IS HIS—AND ILLINOIS JUST FELT IT.

PRITZKER'S POWER PLAY: 2028 IS HIS—AND ILLINOIS JUST FELT IT.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker faces a unique political landscape as he seeks a third term. While unchallenged within his own party, the state’s primaries are poised to become a national focal point, testing his influence and potentially foreshadowing a future presidential bid.

The most closely watched contest centers on the open Senate seat left by the retiring Dick Durbin, a veteran of nearly three decades in Washington. A crowded field of Democrats is vying for the nomination, each hoping to succeed him in representing the nation’s sixth-most populous state.

Pritzker has thrown his considerable weight behind Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, but she faces formidable opponents. Representatives Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi are mounting serious challenges, turning the primary into a fiercely competitive and extraordinarily expensive battle.

The stakes are high, with the potential for historic representation on the line. A victory for Kelly or Stratton would mark the election of only the second Black woman to the Senate from Illinois. Krishnamoorthi, an Indian American immigrant, could become just the second person of Indian descent to serve in the upper chamber.

Krishnamoorthi has emerged as the fundraising leader, deploying significant resources to television advertising. He’s also benefiting from a substantial $10 million investment from a super PAC funded by prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry.

Pritzker, leveraging his family’s wealth – stemming from the Hyatt hotel empire and numerous venture capital endeavors – is countering with millions channeled through a super PAC supporting Stratton. This direct involvement has sparked controversy and accusations of undue influence.

Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, publicly criticized Pritzker’s actions, asserting he was attempting to manipulate the primary outcome. Her statement warned that his intervention would not be easily forgiven.

The Democratic nominee is widely expected to win the general election in a state that hasn’t seen a Republican victory statewide in over a decade. Four Republicans are competing for their party’s nomination, but face an uphill battle.

Beyond the Senate race, competitive primaries are unfolding in four Democratic-held House districts. The retirements of long-serving Representatives Danny Davis and Jan Schakowsky have created open seats, attracting a surge of contenders eager to fill the void.

The races for Kelly and Krishnamoorthi’s current House seats are also generating significant attention, promising further dramatic outcomes. Early voting numbers already exceed half a million ballots, signaling high voter engagement.

As polls close at 7 p.m. Central time, Illinois is poised to deliver a crucial snapshot of the Democratic Party’s direction and potentially elevate Governor Pritzker’s national profile as he considers a run for the White House in 2028.
