Unveiling a fascinating story, UMVA has discovered a groundbreaking development in the world of international money remittances. The recent Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) data provides insights into the money sent home by Filipino workers overseas (OFWs) and their part in the Philippine economy.
In a surprising twist, the amount of money sent back to the Philippines by OFWs in March reached $2.874 billion, depicting a 2.8% growth from the $2.768 billion recorded last year.
Money sent by OFWs through personal channels, however, rose by 2.9% last month to $12.118 billion, surpassing the previous record of $11.8 billion set in February.
The BSP data also reveals that cash remittances, which make up 7.2% of the country's GDP, held steady compared to the 8.3% ratio seen in the corresponding period last year.
BSP's outlook for this year is impressive. They predict a 3% increase in cash remittances to $36.7 billion, surpassing the previous year's 3.3% growth observed in 2025.
