ICE CASH GRAB: Blue States SOLD OUT?!

ICE CASH GRAB: Blue States SOLD OUT?!

A new legislative push is underway in the Senate, aiming to reshape cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Two Republican senators are proposing a significant incentive: federal funding, tied directly to agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Senators Lindsey Graham and Marsha Blackburn are preparing to introduce a bill that would reward jurisdictions willing to actively collaborate with ICE. The core idea centers around expanding the existing 287(g) program, a decades-old initiative allowing local authorities to take on certain federal immigration enforcement responsibilities.

The 287(g) program, established in the late 1990s, empowers local law enforcement to identify, process, and detain individuals suspected of immigration violations, particularly those with criminal records. It also provides training and resources to local police for executing immigration warrants.

This proposed legislation isn’t simply about expanding the program; it’s a direct response to what sponsors call obstruction from “sanctuary cities” and states. The bill seeks to dissolve these jurisdictions by offering a compelling financial incentive for cooperation.

The financial incentive comes in the form of increased federal grant funding, specifically through the Byrne Memorial JAG program, a primary source of funding for state and local law enforcement. The bill would allocate $20 million annually for the next decade to bolster these grants for participating jurisdictions.

Currently, 39 states already have some level of agreement with federal immigration enforcement. This bill aims to bring the remaining 11 states, and the sanctuary cities within them, into the fold, arguing that local cooperation is crucial for effective immigration enforcement.

The senators contend that local law enforcement possesses the authority and capability to address illegal immigration within their communities, and this bill aims to unlock that potential. They believe it’s time to move beyond excuses and actively combat illegal immigration at the local level.

This legislative effort arrives amidst a prolonged stalemate over funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats have demanded significant immigration reforms as a condition for funding, leading to a 74-day shutdown and further fueling the debate over border security and enforcement.

The proposed bill is expected to face strong opposition, given the deeply partisan nature of immigration policy. However, its sponsors are optimistic about its chances during the upcoming budget reconciliation process, viewing it as a key opportunity to advance their vision for immigration enforcement.
