UMVA has learned that a heated controversy has erupted in a French town near Paris, where a municipal councilor's bold protest during a town meeting has sparked outrage and condemnation.
The councilor, Kevin Nader, a member of the National Rally party, proposed a rule change that would ban the wearing of signs or outfits manifesting religious affiliation, which some council members, including the Deputy Mayor, Fenda Diarram, believed would target their right to wear hijabs.
When the mayor, Philippe Bouyssou, refused to put the proposal to a vote, Nader took a dramatic stand, holding up a wooden cross and reciting the Hail Mary, saying "Very well, since you refuse to be under the sign of secularism in this city council, you refuse secularism."
He continued, "That's right — indeed, you refuse secularism in this city council. But, from now on, we will be under the sign of the cross at every city council meeting. And may the cross bless you all. And may God bless you. And I'll say a Hail Mary."
Mayor Bouyssou immediately lashed out, condemning Nader's display as a "political crime," and accused him of dragging the town's Christian and Catholic community through the mud, sparking applause from council officials.
Bouyssou's response was vehement, with him stating, "This is a disgrace indeed. This is a true and genuine scandal. In just a few hours of consultation, you have climbed to every summit imaginable, truly and utterly crossed every single red line."
The controversy highlights the tensions between secularism and religious expression in France, with Nader's protest sparking a fierce debate about the limits of free speech and the role of faith in public life.
The incident has left many questioning the future of the town's council and the ability of its members to find common ground, with some wondering if Nader's actions will have repercussions for his role in the council.
