Lufthansa Just SWALLOWED Italy's Airline—What Happens NEXT?!

A significant shift is underway in the world of air travel, as Italy’s ITA Airways prepares for a deeper integration with the Lufthansa Group. Starting April 1st, a transformation begins that promises to reshape the travel experience for millions of passengers.

The cornerstone of this change is the adoption of Lufthansa’s renowned Miles & More loyalty program. ITA’s existing Volare program, with its 4 million members, will seamlessly transition, instantly bolstering Miles & More to become Europe’s largest airline loyalty program, encompassing a staggering 39 million members.

For Volare members, this means immediate access to a wider world of rewards and benefits. Elite status will be recognized, with matching up to the coveted Senator level offered at no cost. A window of opportunity exists to convert remaining Volare points into vouchers for future travel on ITA and its partners, valid for a year.

But the changes extend far beyond loyalty points. ITA Airways is officially joining the Star Alliance network, unlocking a wealth of perks for travelers. This includes priority boarding, access to exclusive airport lounges, and seamless connections across the alliance’s vast global network.

The addition of ITA expands the Star Alliance map, adding Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO) as a key hub, alongside six new destinations within Italy – Alghero, Genoa, and Lampedusa among them. This expansion promises greater connectivity and convenience for passengers.

Lufthansa’s strategic investment in ITA, acquiring a 41% stake in January 2025 with plans for full control by 2027, is driven by a desire to strengthen its presence in Italy and unlock new opportunities. A key focus is leveraging ITA’s Rome hub to expand flights to Africa and Latin America.

The integration doesn’t stop there. Lufthansa and United Airlines are working to include ITA in their “A++” transatlantic joint venture. This collaboration will allow for coordinated schedules and fares between Europe, the U.S., and Canada, offering passengers more choices and competitive pricing.

ITA is already expanding its reach in the U.S., currently serving seven cities and adding Houston as its eighth destination in May. This growth is strategically aligned with United’s major hubs, signaling a strong partnership and a commitment to the North American market.

Executives at ITA emphasize the importance of the U.S. market, second only to Italy itself. Future expansion is likely to focus on further strengthening connections through partner hubs, including Newark Liberty International Airport.

This integration represents a major milestone for both ITA Airways and the Lufthansa Group, promising a more connected, rewarding, and seamless travel experience for passengers worldwide.
