Man Utd EXECUTION: Star AXED as Ratcliffe REBUILDS!

Man Utd EXECUTION: Star AXED as Ratcliffe REBUILDS!

The air at Old Trafford hangs heavy with a quiet reckoning. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s co-owner, has reportedly made a firm decision regarding Manuel Ugarte, the midfielder who arrived with a £50 million price tag and a wave of expectation just last summer.

Ugarte’s journey to Manchester was meant to be a statement of intent, a bolstering of the midfield ranks. Instead, his first season has been a story of struggle and unfulfilled promise, a frustrating inability to cement a place in the starting eleven.

The initial hope surrounding his reunion with Ruben Amorim, the coach who previously guided him at Sporting CP, quickly faded. Despite seven starts under Amorim – including a particularly painful League Cup defeat – Ugarte couldn’t consistently deliver the impact the team desperately needed.

The managerial change to Michael Carrick brought little respite. Opportunities became even scarcer, limited to a single start and sporadic appearances off the bench, often as a late replacement for Casemiro.

A recent match against Leeds proved particularly damaging. Ratcliffe, watching from the stands, witnessed a performance that seemingly solidified his belief: Ugarte must be moved on this summer. The defeat felt like a stark illustration of the player’s shortcomings.

The statistics paint a grim picture. Of the ten games Ugarte has started this season, Manchester United have secured victory in only one. This lack of positive impact weighs heavily on the club’s ambitions.

Carrick, however, has publicly defended the player, acknowledging the difficulty of the Leeds match and highlighting Ugarte’s work rate when the team was reduced to ten men. He insists the midfielder has been “fine” in his appearances.

Yet, even Carrick’s support couldn’t entirely dispel the criticism, including pointed remarks from former captain Gary Neville, who described Ugarte as “too limited.” The shadow of doubt lingers.

Ratcliffe’s decision signals a clear intent to overhaul the midfield. A lengthy shortlist of potential replacements has already emerged, including names like Aurelien Tchouameni and Joao Gomes, indicating a significant investment is planned for the summer transfer window.

For Ugarte, the future appears uncertain. The weight of expectation, coupled with a lack of consistent playing time and a critical assessment from the club’s ownership, suggests his time at Old Trafford may be drawing to a close.
