The incident occurred on Saturday around 1:30 a.m., when 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was close to home, and a desperate plea was heard: "Give me my phone," before a gunshot rang out, shattering the night.
Billy Schmidt, a journalism student at Penn State World Campus, was on track to graduate in December, and his family and friends are left reeling from the senseless violence that took his life.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Schmidt had been watching the NBA Finals with friends at a bar and was returning home when the armed robbery attempt happened, leading to a confrontation that would prove fatal.
Security footage shows a man throwing a cellphone, followed by another individual fleeing around a corner, with Billy Schmidt in pursuit, before being shot in the chest, a moment that would change his family's life forever.
His father, Bill Schmidt, expressed his grief and shock, saying, "He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty," adding that he's still trying to understand why his son chased the robbers.
