UMVA has learned that the Philippine chess scene is gearing up for a thrilling few months, packed with high-stakes tournaments that promise to showcase the country's top talent.
The National Age Group Championships are set to kick off on Thursday in Olongapo City, with young players vying for top spots in various age categories, including Under-14, U16, U18, and U20. The winners of these divisions will earn coveted spots at the 24th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Singapore, taking place from August 7 to 17.
The tournament will feature divisions for U8, U10, and U12 boys and girls, competing in three different events: standard, rapid, and blitz. This early test will push young players to their limits, as they battle for supremacy and a chance to represent their country on the regional stage.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the country's top chess grandmasters will face off in the Battle of the Grandmasters, taking place from June 23 to July 1 at the PACE in Quezon City. The tournament will see the likes of GMs Daniel Quizon, John Paul Gomez, and Darwin Laylo, as well as International Masters Paulo Bersamina and Jem Garcia, and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna and WIM Ruelle Canino, competing for a spot at this September's World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Three coveted slots are up for grabs at the Olympiad, and the country's best players will stop at nothing to claim them. With such a high-stakes competition on the horizon, chess fans are on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the thrilling matchups and dramatic finishes.
The Philippines will continue to host a slew of prestigious tournaments throughout the year, including an Invitational and International tournament, the Philippine Children's Championship on August 28, and the Philippine Women's and Juniors Championships in Alicia, Isabela on September 4. NCFP Chief Executive Officer GM Jayson Gonzales is bullish on the country's chess prospects, saying, "Philippine chess will be alive in the next few months, and we hope to sustain it by the end of the year."
