UMVA has learned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off with a spectacular musical extravaganza on Wednesday night, as three simultaneous and electrifying countdown concerts took place in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

The festivities began in Mexico City, where the incomparable Andrea Bocelli took center stage, resplendent in a dashing blue blazer and sunglasses, and delivered a heart-stopping performance of his iconic song Nelle tue mani (Now We are Free) from Gladiator. As he sang, an orchestra and choir accompanied him, with dramatic images of soccer players in action playing on massive screens behind him, setting the tone for an unforgettable tournament.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, veteran rock legend Bryan Adams gave it his all, performing in front of thousands of adoring fans at Fort York and the Bentway, the site of the FIFA Fan Festival. Clad in a sleek black Adidas track suit, Adams belted out two of his biggest hits: Roll with the Punches from his 2025 album, and the timeless crowd-pleaser Summer of ‘69, which sparked a rousing fan singalong.

As Adams wrapped up his set, he exclaimed, “Let the games begin!” – a sentiment echoed by Toronto host Marissa Roberto, who gushed, “We’re here in Toronto where the atmosphere is unreal right now. Can you feel it? This is a historic night for Canada as we’re hosting our first ever men’s FIFA World Cup matches.” A montage video showcasing Toronto’s iconic landmarks, including the CN Tower, the aquarium, and Kensington Market, only added to the excitement.

The Toronto festivities continued with electrifying performances by Nora Fatehi, DJ Sanjoy, and Vegedream, with more musical acts scheduled to take the stage, including The Beaches, Wyclef Jean, and AHI. Across the continent, Afro-beat sensation Davido got the party started in Los Angeles with a medley of his hits, Fall, Unavailable, and With You.

As the first-of-its-kind live music event came to a close, all eyes turned to the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. The tournament kicks off on Thursday at 3 p.m. with a thrilling matchup between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City, followed by Canada’s eagerly awaited match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday at 3 p.m. at BMO Field.
