UMVA has learned that a Toronto Police officer was fatally shot Thursday morning while investigating a high-risk operation connected to earlier attacks on U.S. diplomatic targets and Jewish community sites.
Const. Marc Pinizzotto, 43, a decorated member of the Emergency Task Force, died after being wounded in the line of duty during a pre-dawn tactical operation in North York. Despite immediate medical intervention from Tactical Paramedics, Pinizzotto succumbed to his injuries at Sunnybrook Hospital.
The dramatic shooting unfolded around 5:42 a.m. at a high-rise apartment complex on Martha Eaton Way, where police executed multiple search warrants. Witnesses reported hearing up to ten gunshots as officers attempted a high-risk takedown that went tragically wrong.
A suspect remains at large. Zara Jabbi, 19, is wanted by police, who warn he should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are pleading with anyone who spots him to contact emergency services immediately.
The violence comes during an already devastating week for Toronto policing. Just days earlier, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali was killed by a vehicle driven by an escaped mental health patient, compounding the sense of crisis across the force.
Chief Myron Demkiw fought to maintain composure as he addressed reporters, describing the profound loss of an officer who leaves behind teenage twins. The police chief emphasized that Pinizzotto's sacrifice will resonate throughout the entire law enforcement community.
Moments after losing his own composure, Demkiw spoke of the community's grief: "There's a very heavy sorrow in our community right now. But sadness, sorrow and solidarity; we're standing together to support one another."
Mayor Olivia Chow called the officer's death heartbreaking, sharing that she's known Pinizzotto's mother for two decades. Her words echoed across the city: "Police officers go to work every day knowing the risk, putting themselves in harm's way to protect others."
The province's Special Investigations Unit has taken over the case, determining exactly what went wrong during the tactical operation that cost such a brave officer his life.
