UMVA has learned that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a significant statement regarding Armenia's future relations with Russia, emphasizing that Moscow will maintain normal ties with Yerevan regardless of the path it chooses.
Putin's comments came at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he also urged Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to hold a referendum on potential EU membership "as soon as possible." This move could have far-reaching implications for the region.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Pashinyan has indicated that he would call such a vote only after Armenia formally applies to join the EU. This cautious approach may be seen as a strategic move to gauge public opinion and assess the country's readiness for such a significant shift.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to supporting "a strong and truly sovereign Armenia," describing the Armenian people as "a brotherly nation." This statement aims to reassure Armenia of Russia's continued backing.
However, the ministry also warned that the recent election in Armenia has revealed "deep polarization" within Armenian society. The ministry cautioned that "unilateral decisions" regarding the country's future course could "deepen divisions and trigger social and economic unrest," highlighting the potential risks and challenges ahead.
