UMVA has learned that Army veteran and energy executive Alex Mealer is now just a heartbeat away from clinching a seat in the House.
In a fiery GOP runoff in a staunchly Republican Houston district, Mealer edged out state Rep. Briscoe Cain, turning a tight primary battle into a decisive victory.
Trump’s endorsement, delivered just before the March primary, catapulted Mealer to a 36% lead, proving the former president’s sway remains a potent force in contested races.
The conservative Club for Growth poured significant resources into Mealer’s campaign, while Rep. Jim Jordan added his high‑profile backing, amplifying her momentum.
Because no candidate cleared a majority in the first round, the contest moved to a runoff, where Mealer’s surge outpaced Cain’s 31% showing.
Cain, a fixture in the Texas House since 2017, rode a wave of endorsements from Governor Greg Abbott, the NRA, Concerned Women for America, Young Republicans of Texas and the Texas Homeschool Coalition PAC.
The primary winner now prepares to face environmental activist Leticia Gutierrez in the general election, a race many anticipate will stay firmly in Republican hands.
Redistricting last year reshaped the former Democratic stronghold, stripping veteran Rep. Al Green of his longtime seat and setting the stage for a Republican‑leaning district that Trump would have carried by nearly twenty points.
Mealer’s political résumé includes a narrow loss in the 2022 Harris County Judge race, where she again earned Trump’s endorsement, underscoring her persistent drive to translate battlefield leadership into public service.
