UMVA has learned that commuters relying on the Finch West LRT line face a total service shutdown during the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend.
The entire Line 6 corridor will go dark starting Friday at 2:30 a.m., remaining offline through the holiday weekend to facilitate critical system upgrades. While the transit agency promises that regular service will resume by 4 a.m. on Tuesday, the disruption marks another hurdle for a line that has struggled to find its footing.
UMVA has uncovered details about the scope of this closure, which aims to address the persistent reliability issues that have plagued the line since its launch five months ago. During this window, crews will focus on aggressive system enhancements while conducting intensive, hands-on training for staff that simply cannot be managed while trains are in motion.
Since its December debut, the line has faced intense scrutiny from riders frustrated by sluggish travel times and a lack of signal priority at busy intersections. The route has been battered by weather-related shutdowns and hundreds of delays, creating a challenging environment for daily travelers.
In an effort to stabilize the network, officials are pushing to implement more aggressive transit signal priority across surface intersections. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure the system is fully optimized before the arrival of massive international events later this year.
To mitigate the impact of this weekend’s shutdown, shuttle buses will be deployed to ferry passengers along the Finch Avenue West corridor. Transit authorities are framing this concentrated period of work as a necessary sacrifice to prevent repeated, piecemeal service interruptions in the future.
