US Trade Commissioner Trump Launches Initiative to Lower American Prescription Drug Prices through International Dispute Resolution.

US Trade Commissioner Trump Launches Initiative to Lower American Prescription Drug Prices through International Dispute Resolution.

The United States has long been a generous partner to Europe, providing defense and economic support to its allies. However, it seems that some European nations have taken advantage of this generosity, only to be shocked when confronted by President Donald Trump.

In recent years, the Trump administration has taken a tough stance on trade with Europe, imposing tariffs on countries that fail to comply with fair trade practices. Now, the administration is targeting Germany for its unfair pricing of American-made medicines.

The Trump administration launched a major investigation into German drug pricing on June 18, after Germany proposed paying less for drugs developed in America. Regardless of the outcome of this proposal, Germany already pays too little for American-made drugs, shifting high costs to U.S. companies and American patients.

Germany, like many European countries, has been taking advantage of American pharmaceutical companies for decades. The country has forced these companies to sell their drugs at steep discounts, making the medicines artificially cheap. However, it takes an average of $2.7 billion for U.S. companies to bring a new pharmaceutical to market, and companies must recoup this investment to continue investing in innovative treatments.

By mandating steep pricing discounts, Germany is essentially shifting high costs to Americans, who already pay four times more than Germans for the most expensive drugs. This is unfair and unjust, and the Trump administration is right to investigate Germany's actions.

The investigation, which will last into the fall, could lead to tariffs being imposed on Germany if the administration concludes that the country has acted unfairly. This could have a broader impact on trade between the United States and the European Union, but the Trump administration is determined to get a better deal that helps Americans.

Germany would be wise to follow the lead of the United Kingdom, which agreed to pay more for American medicines after the Trump administration threatened tariffs. By accepting the responsibility to pay for the drugs that save German lives, Germany can restore fairness and benefit American patients, companies, and innovators.

The Trump administration deserves praise for holding Germany accountable and refusing to be taken advantage of on drug pricing. European leaders would do well to realize that under President Trump, they can no longer take advantage of America's generosity without consequences.
