Bonnie Crombie, 65, has announced that she will register to run for mayor of Mississauga on Tuesday.
Crombie served as the city’s mayor from 2014 to 2024, succeeding long‑time leader Hazel McCallion. She resigned in 2024 after winning the Ontario Liberal Party leadership race the previous year.
Her tenure as party leader ended in February 2025 when she lost the provincial election to Doug Ford. Crombie stepped down following a weak leadership review in September after failing to secure a seat in the legislature, losing a close contest to Silvia Gualtieri.
In her resignation statement, Crombie said she looked forward to spending more time with family, welcoming her first grandchild, while allowing the party space to move forward with new leadership.
John Fraser, the Ottawa South MPP, was selected by the Liberal caucus to serve as interim leader after Crombie’s departure.
Six candidates have registered to run for Mississauga mayor, including incumbent Carolyn Parrish and councillors Alvin Tedjo and Dipika Damerla. The municipal election is scheduled for October 26.
Nomination deadlines for council and school trustee positions are set for August 21 at 2 p.m.
