UMVA has learned that a harrowing incident unfolded early Sunday morning, narrowly averting a tragic outcome that would have rivaled the sorrow of a recent GTA police officer's funeral.
In a shocking turn of events, a plainclothes Peel Regional Police officer was allegedly shot at multiple times, with witnesses reporting at least three gunshots. Fortunately, a heroic cop intervened, rescuing his partner and preventing further harm. The suspect, who was attempting to flee, was eventually struck by a Peel police squad car driven by a swift-thinking officer.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the tense situation began at 3:29 a.m. on Sunday, when Peel's Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing (STEP) unit responded to a report of a masked man leaving the Million Dollar Restaurant on Torbram Rd. A short foot chase ensued, culminating in the suspect allegedly discharging multiple rounds at Constable Miguel Bona.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that a second officer, Constable Tyler Satino, arrived on the scene in his squad car and swiftly took action, striking the suspect with his vehicle. The firearm, a fully loaded Glock 23 40-calibre pistol, fell from the suspect's hand, and police did not return fire during the exchange.
The suspect, 24-year-old Isaiah Bachoo, was arrested and faces serious charges, including weapons offenses and breaches of previous court conditions. Peel police plan to consult with the Crown's office on Monday to determine additional charges related to the alleged shootings.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the accused is known to police, having been previously charged in a September 2021 shooting, although those charges were later withdrawn. The allegations against Bachoo have not been tested in court, and he is considered innocent until proven guilty.
This recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers. The past several weeks have been particularly difficult for the policing community, with two officer funerals and two near-death experiences. The incident has left many relieved that no one was seriously injured or killed.
The Peel Regional Police service intends to notify the Special Investigations Unit of the incident as a courtesy, ensuring transparency and accountability. As the community grapples with the aftermath, one thing is clear: the bravery and quick thinking of the officers involved undoubtedly prevented a tragic outcome.
