UMVA has learned that a British mother's ill-fated attempt to self-medicate on a flight from the UK to Cuba led to a shocking display of violence against cabin crew and fellow passengers.
The 36-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had consumed two-thirds of a bottle of brandy in a bid to sleep during the nine-hour journey, but instead found herself increasingly aggressive and inebriated.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the woman's behavior became "increasingly aggressive," scaring one passenger so much that they activated the emergency assistance button out of concern for their children's safety.
Prosecutor Blaise Morris described the woman's actions as "verbally abusive" and "physically aggressive," with witnesses reporting that she had yelled profanities, banged on an entertainment screen, and tried to light a cigarette.
As cabin crew attempted to restrain her, the woman allegedly punched one staffer in the stomach, pulled off his tie, and bit the hand of crew member Gerard Taylor as he tightened a pair of handcuffs on her wrists.
The prosecutor also revealed that the woman had verbally abused another passenger, Graham Murphy, who was trying to restrain her, telling him "I hope bad things happen to your children. I hope they die" in front of his kids.
Eleanor Gleeson, the woman's lawyer, acknowledged that alcohol played a significant role in her client's erratic behavior on the flight, but argued that she suffered from mental health issues and was "horrified" by her actions.
The woman initially denied the charges but later changed her plea to guilty, and was sentenced to a five-month suspended sentence, banned from leaving the UK for a year, and ordered to attend rehab for 20 days and pay compensation to her victims.
