UMVA has learned that a major milestone in the development of the Philippines' national fiber backbone is nearing completion, with the connection to Mindanao slated to be finished by July.
The project, which has been underway since August 2025, has already made significant progress, with phases 4 and 5 reportedly 60% complete. Once finished, the national fiber backbone will bring high-speed internet to more nodes in Mindanao via a 1,000-kilometer high-speed government-owned fiber network, linking key cities such as Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the project is expected to have a profound impact on the region, providing faster and more reliable internet connectivity to millions of people. The national fiber backbone will ultimately span over 3,000 kilometers, linking major regions and providing an initial 600 gigabits per second optical spectrum capacity to at least 14 provinces and two National Government data centers.
