A growing chorus of Democrats, led by Representative Glenn Ivey of Maryland, is intensifying pressure on President Trump to formally address the escalating conflict with Iran. Ivey is demanding a vote on a resolution that would compel the withdrawal of U.S. armed forces from hostilities, a move fiercely opposed by Republicans.
The financial and geopolitical stakes are mounting. Gas prices have surged, adding over a dollar to the per-gallon cost, and the U.S. has already committed $54 billion to the operations with no clear end in sight. This escalating cost fuels the Democrats’ argument for congressional oversight and a defined exit strategy.
The proposed resolution aims to sharply curtail the President’s authority, permitting military action only for strictly defensive purposes. Any further offensive operations would require a formal declaration of war, a step that would force a national debate and congressional accountability.
Republicans dismiss the resolution as a detrimental constraint on the administration’s ability to navigate a volatile international landscape. They argue that the current actions constitute a limited operation, not a full-scale war, and therefore do not necessitate congressional intervention.
This isn’t the first attempt to rein in presidential power regarding Iran. Earlier this year, a similar resolution offered by Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky failed to pass the House, falling short by a significant margin. The vote highlighted the deep partisan divide on the issue.
House Speaker Mike Johnson vehemently opposed the previous resolution, asserting that the U.S. is not, and has no intention of being, at war. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to a limited scope of operations, characterizing congressional interference as a “very serious misstep.”
The current hostilities began on February 28th with a coordinated bombing campaign alongside Israel, targeting Iranian military leadership. The stated justification was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim that has done little to quell the rising anxieties within the Democratic party.
Democrats argue that the President initiated military action without the constitutionally required consent of Congress, a direct violation of the War Powers Act of 1973. This act mandates congressional approval for any military engagement extending beyond 60 days.
Despite a recent ceasefire agreement, Representative Ivey expresses deep skepticism about the prospects for a lasting peace. He points to irreconcilable differences between the ten-point proposal from Iran and the fifteen-point counter-proposal from the U.S., suggesting a fundamental lack of common ground.
Ivey voiced uncertainty about the administration’s ultimate goals and the potential for a swift resolution. He fears the conflict could drag on indefinitely, further straining resources and escalating tensions in an already unstable region.
