RAPPER'S LIFE SHATTERED: Toronto's Self-Defense Claim EXPLODES!

RAPPER'S LIFE SHATTERED: Toronto's Self-Defense Claim EXPLODES!

Ridge “Big Rax” Kazumba once stood at a crossroads of success – a celebrated rapper, a pillar of his community, and a devoted father. That life imploded on August 24, 2023, within the walls of a St. Clair Ave. W. cafe, fueled by a terrifying miscalculation and a handgun he should never have possessed.

Kazumba unleashed approximately fifteen shots, believing he was preemptively striking against those plotting to harm a fellow Regent Park artist. He was tragically wrong. Nakhari Henry-Robinson, a 23-year-old man, lost his life, and Kazumba’s world irrevocably shattered. He was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for twelve years.

The judge described Kazumba’s actions as a “senseless and impulsive act,” born from a genuine, yet entirely unfounded, fear. While the instinct to defend oneself is understandable, the court found no legitimate basis for Kazumba’s belief that his life was in immediate danger. It was a decision made in a moment of irrational panic, with devastating consequences.

In this court exhibit – taken from surveillance video – Ridge Kazumba is circled in red. Kazumba has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Negus Henry-Robinson.

Kazumba, testifying in his own defense, painted a picture of a rising star – a musician who had toured internationally, even sharing the stage with renowned poet and rapper Mustafa Ahmed at the Junos in 2022. But a shadow had fallen over his success. A warning from Mustafa’s brother, Mohamed Ahmed, while Kazumba was visiting family in Congo, spoke of threats against his life and the safety of his son.

The news of Mohamed Ahmed’s murder upon his return to Canada amplified Kazumba’s fear. He altered his routines, secured a safer location for his child, and, for the first time, purchased a firearm. He described a desperate attempt to protect himself and his son in a world where violence against artists from Regent Park was, in his words, a twisted “badge of honour.”

On that fateful day, Kazumba carried the gun, seeking a sense of security after a recording session. He claimed Henry-Robinson entered the cafe, made a threatening gesture, and uttered words that convinced him he was about to be attacked. He reacted instantly, firing the fatal shot that struck Henry-Robinson in the chest, and then again as the man attempted to flee.

A chaotic gunfight erupted, captured on video. Henry-Robinson’s friend, Thulani Moncrieffe-Belmar, returned fire, striking Kazumba in the hand before both men fled the scene. Moncrieffe-Belmar was acquitted of reckless discharge but convicted of possessing a restricted firearm and awaits sentencing.

The jury rejected Kazumba’s claim of self-defense, and the judge found no evidence to support his assertion that Henry-Robinson posed an immediate threat. The court concluded that Kazumba’s fears were “unfounded and unreasonable,” and that arming himself ultimately led to tragedy.

The judge emphasized the pervasive danger of illegal handguns in Toronto, stating that a single, impulsive decision can irrevocably end a life. While acknowledging Kazumba’s prior positive contributions to society, the severity of his crime demanded a significant sentence.

Despite arguments for a longer sentence, the judge recognized Kazumba’s lack of prior criminal record, his successful career, and his dedication to his son. There was a possibility, the judge noted, that he could one day reintegrate into society as a law-abiding citizen. However, the weapons used in the shooting remain unaccounted for, a chilling reminder of the violence that unfolded.
