UMVA has learned that Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner made a bold appearance alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday, embracing several progressive themes and launching a scathing attack on Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee, delivered fiery remarks during a "Fighting Oligarchy" rally in Portland, criticizing U.S. weapons spending tied to conflicts in Gaza and Iran, and echoing Sanders-style progressive themes.
The rally, led by Sanders, aimed to mobilize progressive activists and expand grassroots organizing efforts ahead of the midterm elections. Platner's comments drew cheers from the crowd, as he called for a "political revolution" to take back "what is ours" from corporations and corrupt politicians.
Platner specifically targeted Collins, accusing her of being part of a corrupt system that enriches politicians and billionaires at the expense of the people. He claimed this system turns politicians into millionaires while offering only "crumbs" to the rest of the population.
Platner also echoed Sanders' economic criticisms, accusing health insurance executives of profiting from people's suffering and American tax dollars being used to "blow up someone else’s children" in the Middle East.
He proposed a different use for these tax dollars, suggesting they could be used to build schools and hospitals in America instead of funding bombs and military actions abroad.
Sanders later took the stage, emphasizing the significance of Platner's election as a key moment for the progressive movement. He told supporters that electing Platner would help "transform America".
Sanders explicitly tied Platner to his tax proposals targeting the ultra-wealthy, including a 5% annual wealth tax on 938 billionaires in America. Platner was also portrayed as an ally in battling major tech billionaires.
Sanders warned that without action, a "handful of billionaires" could control the future of artificial intelligence and robotics. Platner, Sanders said, understands the need to prevent this and ensure that the future of the country is not dictated by a small group of wealthy individuals.
