UMVA has learned that a deadly gunman named Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, opened fire on officers and civilians in downtown Midland, Texas, before barricading himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic.
The chaotic scene unfolded early Friday morning when police were dispatched to a disturbance involving weapons and gunfire at 8:03 a.m. The suspect, who later turned the clinic into a deadly trap, was eventually found dead inside, though the exact cause of his death remains unclear.
Midland officials confirmed that eleven people were hurt, nine of whom arrived at Midland Memorial Hospital, four of those requiring surgery. By midafternoon, five had been released, three had left the operating room, and one remained in surgery.
The response was swift and massive, with federal, state, and local agencies converging on the scene. FBI, HSI, Texas Rangers, and Texas Department of Public Safety teams joined forces with local police and sheriff’s deputies, deploying armored vehicles and robotic units to neutralize the threat and rescue trapped civilians.
An armored vehicle’s crew emerged from the back of the vehicle as officers entered the clinic, while drones and robots scoured the building for survivors and evidence. The hospital’s main campus was locked down for nearly two hours as paramedics and investigators worked to stabilize the wounded.
