New York Attorney General Letitia James Commends SEC Chief Jay Clayton for Leadership Amid Growing Opposition to DNI Nominee

Last week, a surprising public endorsement from New York Attorney General Letitia James sparked eyebrows among supporters of President Trump. In an MSNBC interview, James praised Jay Clayton, President Trump's nominee for Director of National Intelligence, describing him as a respected legal professional.

The praise immediately raised questions among Trump supporters, given James's history of false prosecutions against the President. However, a new piece of information has emerged, shedding more light on the situation. James didn't merely praise Clayton on national television; she also sent him a formal three-page letter personally thanking him for his leadership.

The letter, dated May 5, 2025, was sent while Clayton was serving as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. In it, James praised Clayton's office for filing a Statement of Interest supporting the plaintiffs in a Fair Housing Act case. She commended the federal government's intervention and thanked Clayton personally for his leadership and commitment to justice.

On the surface, there's nothing improper about one government official praising another over a legal matter. However, viewed together with James's later public comments supporting Clayton's DNI nomination, the documented record shows that this was not an isolated compliment.

The concern for many conservatives goes beyond this single letter. Jay Clayton's résumé is the résumé of a quintessential institutional lawyer, with decades of experience at Sullivan & Cromwell and the Securities and Exchange Commission. His long career inside elite legal institutions raises questions about his potential leadership and whether he can reform the same institutions.

As the Senate considers Clayton's nomination to lead America's intelligence community, one issue may ultimately matter more than his impressive résumé. Clayton must convince skeptical conservatives that he is prepared not merely to manage America's institutions, but to make meaningful change from within.

Image features two individuals, one speaking passionately at a public event and the other smiling in a formal setting, highlighting contrasting contexts in professional and civic engagement.

President Trump clearly believes Clayton is qualified to serve as Director of National Intelligence, praising his legal ability and urging the Senate to confirm him quickly. However, questions remain about whether President Trump was aware of Letitia James's relationship and comfort with this nominee.
