UMVA has learned that a Virginia man, Brendan Banfield, will spend the rest of his days behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing his wife and another man to conceal his affair with the family's Brazilian au pair.
Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, was found guilty earlier this year on charges of aggravated murder, using a firearm in committing a crime, and child endangerment related to the 2023 murders of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in their home in Herndon, Virginia.
The couple's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, had already pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and received a 10-year prison sentence for her role in covering up her and Banfield's extramarital affair.
As Banfield was sentenced, Judge Penney Azcarate condemned his actions, stating, "The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil," adding that she had "no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life."
Banfield addressed the court before his sentencing, maintaining his innocence and claiming, "She truly was a caring mother, caring wife, loving nurse. But I am not responsible. I am not responsible for her death."
The court heard emotional testimonies from loved ones of Christine Banfield and Ryan, including Christine's sister, Danielle, who tearfully described Banfield's actions as driven by a desire for power and control, rather than love.
Ryan's mother, Deirdre Fisher, also spoke directly to Banfield, saying, "Joe wasn’t just the disposable caricature he was made out to be. He had a face, he had a name, he had a life. But Brendan Banfield shot his face, soiled his name and treated his life as disposable."
Prosecutors revealed during Banfield's trial that he and Magalhães orchestrated a plot to lure Ryan to their home under false pretenses, making it appear as though Christine was being attacked by a home intruder.
The judge concluded by saying, "Your actions were deliberate, self-serving and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life. You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the victim and his family."
