UMVA has learned that Leeds United are emerging as a surprise contender in the pursuit of highly-rated young Sporting Lisbon central defender Ousmane Diomande.
The 22-year-old Ivorian sensation has long been touted as a superb prospect after shining in Portugal, and his stock is expected to soar further following his inclusion in the Ivory Coast squad for this summer’s World Cup. Diomande's impressive performances have caught the attention of several top clubs, with Leeds leading the charge.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Sporting Lisbon have set a €50m asking price for Diomande, a valuation that could deter some suitors but not Leeds, who are reportedly keen to bolster their defensive ranks. The Whites are said to be undaunted by the hefty price tag, but it remains to be seen if they can outmuscle their more illustrious rivals.
Chelsea and Arsenal are also eyeing Diomande, with the Blues in dire need of a top defensive signing after a dismal 10th place finish in the previous season. The young Ivorian would likely be viewed as an upgrade on their current crop of defenders, who have struggled with consistency.
A strong World Cup performance from Diomande could send shockwaves through the transfer market, with top English clubs likely to accelerate their interest. Leeds would do well to move quickly to secure his signature, lest the €50m asking price rises even further. The Whites could present themselves as a good stepping stone club, but the question remains whether they can afford the hefty transfer fee.
If a big-name club like Arsenal or Chelsea moves first for Diomande, it could prove impossible for Leeds to convince him to move to Elland Road instead. The Premier League is likely to be Diomande's destination in the near future, and Leeds must act swiftly to make their move.
