Catherine Logan still relives the moment her world collapsed. It was a quiet night in Renfrew, Eastern Ontario, when the knock came at her door. Police officers stood on her porch, their faces unreadable. They told her that her only son, 41-year-old Jonathan, had been shot dead.
“One of the officers started talking about an incident… and said there had been a shooting and there had been a victim — and that Jonathan, my son, was the victim,” she says, her voice raw with grief. That was how she learned her boy had been gunned down. “I was changed. Well, Jonathan was my only child. I wonder sometimes, am I still a mom?”
The murder happened on May 19, 2023, around 10:30 p.m. inside a home on Vimy Boulevard, on the west side of this Ottawa Valley town. The gunman fled before police arrived and has never been caught. Investigators believe Jonathan was deliberately targeted — and they are convinced someone out there knows the truth.
“There were several other people in the house that fled when the incident happened,” says Detective Sergeant Joe Limlaw. “We believe someone knows something that can help us solve this case and provide answers to Jonathan’s loved ones.”
Neighbors describe a street plagued by drug activity — a steady stream of vehicles, intoxicated people wandering, drug paraphernalia left in plain sight. Jonathan himself had battled substance abuse for years, his mother admits. But she also remembers a different side of him: a protector who would have stood up for any friend in trouble.
“If something like this had happened to one of his friends, he would have done the right thing,” Catherine says, her plea turning raw and direct. “I know a lot of them know something and I understand they’re scared. I would be, too, but it’s my son and I need answers.”
Three years have passed. Jonathan left behind a daughter. His killer walks free. And his mother is still waiting. “How you guys can live with yourself right now, I don’t know. But you need to step up.”
