UMVA has learned that a catastrophic blaze ripped through a trailer loaded with fireworks on a Tennessee interstate Saturday night, sending pyrotechnics shooting across the roadway and forcing authorities to shut down traffic as emergency crews battled the inferno.
The chaotic scene unfolded on Interstate 75 northbound near the Ooltewah exit, where flames engulfed the trailer and fireworks launched into the air, exploding in multiple directions. The incident sparked a massive response from emergency services, with firefighters and law enforcement working to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the trailer was loaded with fireworks that became fully involved in the blaze, triggering a series of explosions throughout the incident. The situation was made more complex by the need for emergency vehicles to travel northbound in the southbound lanes to shuttle water to crews battling the flames.
Miraculously, despite the intense and unpredictable nature of the fire, no injuries were reported. The Chattanooga Fire Department responded to the scene, with Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department serving as the lead agency under a mutual aid agreement.
The incident forced authorities to temporarily shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 75, with the southbound side reopening relatively quickly. However, northbound lanes remained closed as crews worked to extinguish hot spots and clear the burned trailer from the roadway.
