INNOCENT MAN EXECUTED: His Final Words Will SHOCK You.

INNOCENT MAN EXECUTED: His Final Words Will SHOCK You.

Chadwick Scott Willacy faced his end on Tuesday, executed by the State of Florida for a crime that haunted a family for over three decades. Even in his final moments, he proclaimed his innocence, a stark declaration delivered with a chilling acknowledgment of the pain he’d inflicted. “To the victim’s family, I hope this brings you peace. If it does, that’s good,” he stated, “But this is not right.”

The execution unfolded at 6:15 p.m. within the walls of Florida State Prison, the culmination of a three-drug lethal injection. Willacy, 58 years old, was convicted in 1991 for the brutal 1990 murder of 56-year-old Marlys Sather, a neighbor whose life was extinguished with terrifying cruelty.

The details of the crime are harrowing. Sather returned home from work on September 5, 1990, to discover Willacy in the midst of burglarizing her Palm Bay residence. What followed was a descent into unimaginable violence. He attacked her, bludgeoning her head before binding her hands and feet with wire and duct tape.

The brutality didn’t end there. Court documents reveal Willacy choked Sather with a cord, applying such intense force that a fragment of her skull was dislodged. He then stole her ATM card and car, using them to drain her bank account. Returning to her home, he systematically disabled her smoke detectors, doused her in gasoline, and ignited her, even positioning a fan to fuel the flames.

The autopsy revealed Sather died from smoke inhalation, a horrifying detail indicating she was alive while being consumed by fire. The sheer calculated malice of the act left an enduring scar on those who knew her and a decades-long quest for justice in its wake.

For Sather’s family, the execution marked the end of a 36-year wait. “We have waited 36.5 years for justice for our mother,” they shared, their grief still palpable. “The pain has been unbearable without her with us every day.” Their loss was compounded by the recent death of Sather’s husband to cancer, leaving her vulnerable and alone.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Willacy continued to assert his innocence, claiming he could never harm a friend. He did offer a final message of remorse to his own family and encouragement to fellow inmates, urging them to “stay strong.” The lethal injection – an anesthetic, a paralytic, and potassium acetate – brought his life to a close.

The investigation uncovered a trail of damning evidence. Willacy’s fingerprints were found on the fan used to intensify the fire and on a gas can taken from Sather’s garage. Witnesses placed a man matching his description near her home and driving her vehicle on the day of the murder. His girlfriend discovered Sather’s check register discarded in his trash, leading to his arrest.

Police recovered stolen property and clothing bearing Sather’s blood at Willacy’s home, further solidifying the case against him. The initial 1991 conviction brought a death sentence, though it was later overturned due to a procedural error regarding jury selection. A subsequent trial in 1995 again resulted in a death sentence, this time with an 11-1 jury recommendation.

The Sather family’s statement poignantly remembered Marlys as a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a recent widow, bravely navigating life one day at a time. Her absence continues to be a profound and enduring loss.

Willacy’s execution was the fifth in Florida this year, following a surge in executions in the state. It also marked the ninth execution nationwide, a somber reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding capital punishment and the enduring consequences of violent crime.
