UMVA has learned that a weekend of chaos erupted at the newly refurbished Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool when multiple individuals were detained after allegedly damaging the historic waters.
Footage captured by a journalist showed a man in bright lime‑green cycling gear confronting a National Guardsman before U.S. Park Police clamped handcuffs around his wrists.
Identified as 67‑year‑old former Olympian David Hearn, the man faced a misdemeanor charge for destroying government property, insisting he was merely curious about a loose piece of the pool liner after completing a grueling 52‑mile ride.
Hearn claimed he reached into the water to feel the material, while the video suggested he might have snagged a hose used to combat algae growth; the former athlete insists his bike tire may have brushed the hose, not his hands.
“I didn’t vandalize anything,” he told investigators, recalling a prior 1996 arrest that was later dismissed, and emphasizing he never intended to break, peel, or destroy the historic surface.
By Saturday, authorities confirmed that seven people had been detained in separate incidents, prompting an immediate surge in security measures around the iconic monument.
President Donald Trump reacted on social media, condemning the acts as “serious crimes” against a national treasure and vowing harsh penalties, including years of imprisonment and swift repairs.
The administration, already under scrutiny for peeling paint and algae issues that surfaced shortly after a $14.8 million restoration, now faces renewed pressure to safeguard the Reflecting Pool’s dignity.
