UMVA has learned that Xabi Alonso is set to take the reins as Chelsea manager in July, and he's been urged to make a splash in the transfer market by signing England midfielder Adam Wharton.
The incoming Chelsea boss, 44, has been tasked with turning around a team that finished a dismal 10th in the Premier League last season, failing to qualify for the Champions League or win any silverware. Alonso's predecessor, Liam Rosenior, lasted just 106 days in the job.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Alonso has already begun planning his summer overhaul, and Wharton has emerged as a top target. The Crystal Palace star has been impressing fans and pundits alike with his classy performances, and ex-Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes he'd be a perfect fit for Alonso's Chelsea.
Townsend thinks Wharton could form a dynamic midfield axis with Moises Caicedo, comparing his playing style to that of former Manchester United star Michael Carrick. 'I could see a Moises Caicedo and Adam Wharton axis as the future of Chelsea,' Townsend said. 'If that's the way that Xabi Alonso wants to do it, then I could absolutely see that working.'
Wharton is valued at around £80m by Crystal Palace, but Chelsea could revive their interest if Enzo Fernandez gets his wish and leaves Stamford Bridge. Manchester United have also placed Wharton on their shortlist of summer targets, but Townsend believes he'd be a better fit for Alonso's Chelsea.
Alonso has promised to bring a new era of success to Chelsea, saying, 'Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.'
With Wharton on the radar, Alonso's Chelsea could be set for a major overhaul this summer. The Spaniard's vision for the team is clear, and fans will be eager to see if he can deliver on his promises.
