UMVA has learned that the Premier League's European places are still up for grabs after Aston Villa's thrilling win in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
The victory secures Villa's spot in next season's Champions League, but their result against Manchester City this Sunday will have a significant impact on the remaining European places. England's Elite Performance Spot (EPS) in the Champions League has added an extra layer of complexity to the qualification process.
With the EPS, Villa would need to finish fifth for the extra Champions League spot to be awarded to the team that finishes sixth. Currently, Villa sit fourth, three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the season.
If Villa finish fourth, the Champions League spots would be filled by Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, and Aston Villa, with either Bournemouth or Liverpool securing the fifth and final spot. Bournemouth, Brighton, or Liverpool would then take the Europa League spot, while other teams would compete for the Conference League.
Liverpool still have an outside chance of finishing sixth and securing a Europa League spot if they lose to Brentford and Bournemouth beats Nottingham Forest by a significant margin. Bournemouth currently sit sixth with 56 points, ahead of their match against Nottingham Forest.
Brighton are three points behind Bournemouth but have a better goal difference. If they beat Manchester United and Bournemouth loses, Brighton will leapfrog Bournemouth to secure sixth place and a potential Champions League spot.
The Premier League table is set for a thrilling finale, with multiple teams still in contention for European places. The final day of the season promises to be an electrifying conclusion to the campaign.
If Villa finish fifth and the Premier League gets six Champions League spots, a Europa League place will be lost, with only seventh place qualifying for the Europa League. The team that finishes eighth will be in the Conference League next season.
In a separate competition, Crystal Palace have a chance to qualify for next season's Europa League as Conference League winners if they beat Rayo Vallecano in the final on May 27.
