A stark ultimatum echoed across the globe Saturday evening as former President Trump issued a direct threat to Iran. He demanded the full and unobstructed opening of the Strait of Hormuz, setting a 48-hour deadline for compliance.
The warning wasn’t veiled in diplomatic language. Trump stated the United States would “hit and obliterate” Iran’s power plants, beginning with the largest, should the critical waterway remain restricted. This declaration followed Iran’s decision to limit passage through the Strait to only select vessels.
The situation rapidly escalated tensions in a region already on edge. Global oil prices surged to $112 a barrel, reacting to the closure and recent Iranian attacks on oil facilities in Qatar. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for the world’s energy supply, handling approximately 20% of all oil traded internationally.
Just days prior, U.S. Central Command released previously classified footage depicting American military strikes against Iranian naval assets within the Strait. The footage showcased the destruction of an Iranian submarine and accompanying smaller vessels.
CENTCOM officials stated the strikes were intended to dismantle Iran’s capacity to disrupt maritime traffic and threaten international shipping lanes. They emphasized years of Iranian actions endangering freedom of navigation in waters crucial to global security and economic stability.
This latest confrontation wasn’t an isolated incident. Previously, the former President had cautioned Iran against deploying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, promising devastating repercussions if such actions were taken. He insisted any mines be removed “IMMEDIATELY!”
Trump further declared the U.S. would employ the same advanced technology and missile capabilities used to combat drug trafficking to decisively eliminate any vessel attempting to mine the waterway. He warned of a swift and forceful response, urging Iran to “BEWARE!”
The threat extended beyond mere retaliation. Trump indicated a willingness to utilize existing military technology to proactively neutralize any perceived threat to shipping, signaling a firm stance against Iranian interference in the vital shipping lane.
