AIR CANADA CEO OUSTED: French Fury Forces Shock Exit!

AIR CANADA CEO OUSTED: French Fury Forces Shock Exit!

A seismic shift has occurred at the helm of Canada’s largest airline. Michael Rousseau, the CEO of Air Canada, will be stepping down by the end of 2026, concluding a nearly two-decade-long tenure that reshaped the company’s trajectory.

The announcement followed a week of intense scrutiny sparked by a condolence video released after the tragic loss of two Air Canada pilots at LaGuardia Airport. The video, delivered solely in English, ignited a firestorm of criticism and reopened a long-simmering debate about bilingualism within the national carrier.

Air Canada’s board acknowledged the controversy, stating that the ability to communicate effectively in both English and French will be a crucial factor in selecting Rousseau’s successor. This signals a clear commitment to addressing the concerns raised by Quebec and French-speaking Canadians.

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau giving a speech at the Montreal Chamber of Commerce in Montreal, Quebec, Wednesday, November 03, 2021.

Rousseau joined Air Canada in 2007, steadily rising through the ranks to become President and CEO in 2021. Prior to leading the airline, he held key financial positions, including Chief Financial Officer, and previously worked with the Hudson Bay Company.

The issue of Rousseau’s limited French language skills wasn’t new. Shortly after his appointment as CEO, he faced backlash for remarking on his decade-long residency in Montreal without acquiring proficiency in French – a statement that deeply offended many in Quebec.

The recent video was the catalyst for a formal demand for his resignation from Quebec’s provincial legislature, with Premier Francois Legault labeling the lack of French as disrespectful to both employees and customers. This political pressure undoubtedly influenced the board’s decision.

Rousseau himself expressed regret that his language limitations had overshadowed the grief surrounding the pilots’ deaths and reaffirmed his ongoing efforts to improve his French, acknowledging his continued struggles despite years of lessons.

Despite the controversy, observers note Rousseau’s significant achievements during his leadership. He successfully navigated Air Canada through turbulent times, notably securing a new pilot contract without major labor disruptions – a considerable accomplishment in the industry.

According to former Air Canada Chief Operating Officer Duncan Dee, Rousseau leaves the airline in a stronger position than he inherited, having fostered a period of relative labor peace and solidifying Air Canada’s standing on the global stage.

The search for Rousseau’s replacement began earlier this year, reflecting a proactive approach to succession planning. The airline has launched an “extensive global search” to identify a leader who embodies both strong business acumen and linguistic proficiency.

Rousseau intends to remain with the company and on the board during the transition, ensuring a smooth handover of leadership. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served Air Canada and its dedicated workforce.
