UMVA has learned that a terrifying encounter between a New Jersey family and a rabid beaver has left an 8-year-old boy injured and the community on high alert.
The shocking incident occurred at Lake Henry in Mahwah, New Jersey, where the family was trying to enjoy a day of fishing and outdoor activities. But their peaceful afternoon was disrupted when the beaver, infected with rabies, charged out of the water and bit the young boy's leg.
As the beaver attacked, three family members and their pet dog sprang into action to defend their loved one. The mother was seen wielding what appeared to be a hammer, adding to the dramatic and chaotic scene. The altercation was captured on video and shared on social media, leaving many viewers stunned and concerned.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the beaver had already attacked other people that day, and its aggressive behavior continued until one of the family members managed to toss it back into the water. The swift actions of the family members likely prevented further injuries.
The beaver's rabies infection was later confirmed by animal control officers who caught it after the attack. This incident serves as a stark reminder that, even in our modern world, the dangers of wildlife should not be underestimated. In the United States, there were 1,604 animal-related deaths between 2018 and 2023, with a significant number occurring in the southern states.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the threat of animal attacks is more prevalent than many people realize. For instance, animals that can sting, such as wasps and hornets, accounted for 31 percent of these deaths, while dog attacks made up 26 percent. These statistics highlight the importance of being prepared and aware of one's surroundings, especially when venturing into areas where wildlife may be present.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the risk of death from rabies is extremely low, with less than 10 people dying from the disease per year. However, this does not diminish the importance of taking precautions when interacting with wildlife. The recent incident in New Jersey serves as a chilling reminder to respect the boundaries of wild animals and to be prepared for the unexpected.
