UMVA has learned that a 14-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham, an Indiana University Business School graduate who was shot and killed in Indianapolis on May 28.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, allegedly gunned down Scrogham inside his car in a downtown parking garage while Scrogham was on his way to an Indianapolis Indians Minor League baseball game. The arrest was made on Wednesday, and the teen could potentially face charges as an adult.
According to information obtained by UMVA, officers arrived on the scene to find Scrogham suffering from a gunshot wound inside his vehicle; he later died at the hospital. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with friends and family mourning the loss of a young life.
A friend of Scrogham's, Seth Davis, took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to the victim, describing him as a kind, smart, and well-spoken individual who had graduated as a top 100 student at the IU Kelley School of Business just weeks before his death. Scrogham had also just started his new job as a property development analyst.
Marion County Indiana Prosecutor Ryan Mears is expected to provide an update on the case on Friday morning. The arrest of the 14-year-old suspect brings some sense of closure to the case, but the community is still reeling from the senseless violence that took Scrogham's life.
The suspect's charges will be determined in the coming days, and it remains to be seen whether he will be tried as an adult. For now, the focus is on the memory of Brett Scrogham and the impact he had on those who knew him.
